An ad-free worship app built for the Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church and its 250,000 members across Odisha.

The Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church is one of India's oldest Protestant denominations — founded in 1882, with 250,000 members spread across the Koraput district and neighbouring states. We built JELC Church App to solve this. A free, ad-free Android app with the complete Odia Lutheran hymn book, daily Bible readings, catechism, prayers, and full liturgical resources. Everything works offline. Everything fits in a pastor's pocket. The app has been on the Play Store since 2020. It now carries a 4.6 rating across 250+ reviews. It is officially cited on the Wikipedia page for the Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church as the church's Odia-language Lutheran hymn app.

Most worship apps fail in three main ways for a community like JELC. First, they always need internet — but in many villages, even getting 2G properly is difficult. Second, most apps are only in English — which is not helpful for an Odia-speaking congregation. Third, many apps have ads or paid features — and that doesn’t feel right during worship. JELC Synod needed something different. Not just another app, but a real tool made for real worship — in their own language, and something that works wherever believers are.
Most rural Odisha congregations have unreliable data. Apps that load hymns from the cloud fail the moment the service starts.
Every digital hymn app we tested was English-only. JELC's congregation prays, sings, and reads scripture in Odia — and had no app that respected that.
A pastor on a house visit was carrying a hymn book, a liturgy book, a Bible, and a prayer guide. Four heavy books. We saw an opportunity to combine them.

We built an offline-first Android app with the complete Odia Lutheran hymn book — 450+ songs with lyrics and audio, along with daily Bible readings, catechism, worship resources, and prayer collections. Everything is built into the app, so it works even in airplane mode without internet. New content updates automatically when a connection is available. We also added night mode for easy reading, swipe navigation for faster browsing, and a report option so the community can help improve content and fix spelling errors.
The full hymn book, liturgy, and Bible bundle with the app on install. The app never breaks because of bad signal. Updates sync when internet is available — quietly, in the background.
Quick access to liturgies, readings, and prayers. Swipe between chapters. Night mode for evening services. Search by hymn number, title, or theme. Designed for one-handed use during ministry.
Every verse has a small Report button. Users flag spelling mistakes or corrections. We review and ship the fix. The community improves the app together — true Odia, true to the church.

Building for a 138-year-old church was not just about designing and launching an app. We first spoke with the Bishop’s office, pastors, and younger believers to understand their needs while respecting church traditions. The first version took six months — from collecting and verifying content to design, development, testing, and launch. Since 2020, the app has continued growing with regular updates based on community feedback.

This app is just magnificent. It will be very helpful to all the pastors. Those who want to be lighter — pastors and believers — can carry it easily. It will also be helpful especially to those who are house visitors. May God bless you for this innovative app.
